LAKE COUNTY, Calif .– During Child Passenger Safety Week, September 19-25, the California Highway Patrol will educate the public on the importance of ensuring children ride in a child safety seat properly adjusted and installed.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, car crashes are the leading cause of death in children between the ages of 1 and 13.
In 2020, 90 children aged 13 and under died from car crashes in California.
The NHTSA reports that while most parents and guardians are confident that they have installed their child safety seat correctly, almost half (46%) are incorrectly installed.
California law requires all children under the age of 2, or weighing less than 40 pounds and measuring less than 40 inches, to sit in a rear-facing car seat. All children under the age of 8 must sit in the back seat in a safety seat appropriate for their age. Safety experts recommend that children ride in the backseat until the age of 13.

“Proper use of child safety seats can mean the difference between life and death,” said CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray. “Our child passenger safety technicians can help make sure your most valuable cargo arrives safely. ”
At all CHP child safety seat events throughout the week, passenger child safety technicians will provide free safety seat inspections, education and hands-on training for parents and caregivers.
These free safety seat inspections are also available year round, by appointment, at any CHP Area office.
