Julia Eastman is just a freshman, but the Southeast Valley college student is making steady progress far beyond her years for the Fort Dodge Women’s Swim Team.
Eastman was a two-time winner for the Dodgers at the annual Gary Winkler Invitational on Saturday, winning the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke titles in the FDSH pool.
The local Dodgers took third place, finishing behind Sioux City Metro and the University Reserve team at West Des Moines Dowling.
“Julia had a great day” Fort Dodge head coach Ashley Beaumont said. “It was great to see her ramp up and win two events. Most importantly, she gets the experience she needs (at the university level) to continue to progress and surpass herself.
“There’s always a balance between pushing (during the regular season) and shrinking to prepare (for Districts and State). But Julia is making great strides, and she’s going to be able to outdo herself even more when we go to Ames for a duel on Tuesday. They will all be able to measure themselves and see where they stand (compared to the Small Cyclones ranked third).
Eastman clocked times of 1: 04.38 in the 100 butterfly and 1: 05.19 in the 100 backstroke.
Raegan Wooldridge, a sophomore at Manson Northwest Webster, won silver in the 100 breaststroke (1: 13.94) and bronze in the 200 IM (2: 28.79). The Dodgers 200 IM relay quartet of junior Eileen Fierke, rookie Addison Daniel, Eastman and Wooldridge also finished second in 2: 00.36.
Junior Makenna Kammerer was third in the 200 freestyle (2: 13.00) and 500 free (5: 54.20).
“Raegan and Makenna had a great day”, said Beaumont. “They’re both eclipsed at times, but they’re working incredibly hard and really showing signs. Raegan’s breaststroke was incredible, and Makenna is just a quiet, incredibly versatile and important leader.
Fierke, a two-time state medalist last year, hypertensive her elbow during the medley relay and was forced to miss the rest of the competition.
The Dodgers take on Ames this Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
