DES MOINES – Country’s longest-serving attorney general seeks new term in Iowa

Tom Miller, 77, said on Saturday he would run for his 11th term in 2022 because he “unfinished” he wants to occupy himself.

Miller has already held the position for almost 40 years. He was first elected in 1978 and served until 1991, when he left office after losing the Democratic primary as governor.

He was re-elected in 1994 and has served since.

“I think we’re doing the best job we’ve ever done in the GA office, and we have one of the best groups of people on our staff.” Miller told the Des Moines Register in an interview.

” I like what I do. I am energized by what I do. And we have a lot of things outstanding, in my opinion.

Miller has said he wants to play a role in how Iowa will spend the hundreds of millions of dollars it is expected to receive from settlements with manufacturers and distributors of opioid painkillers.

And he wants to continue his work on antitrust cases involving tech giants Facebook and Google.

Miller is one of the few Democrats to hold a position statewide in Iowa, but he says he tries to keep politics out of his job.

“We made a fundamental decision that has served us well until today, and that was to use the office to serve the interests of ordinary Iowans,” he said.
