Concerns for Minneapolis | News, Sports, Jobs

Early voting began Friday in Minneapolis for amendments to the city’s charter. Among them is the question of whether to replace the Minneapolis Police Department with a Public Safety Department.

Whether this issue passes or not, Minneapolis needs to do something about its crime problem.

Minnesota’s largest city suffers from a year of violent crime on the rise, where every weekend brings news of more shootings. Many of the victims are children caught between two fires of random shootings.

Over the weekend, for example, 11 people were injured in seven separate shootings over a 26-hour period.

You might be wondering, what is the relationship between the crime rate in Minneapolis and New Ulm? How many New Ulmites have children or parents living in the Twin Cities? How many travel to the Twin Cities for business or entertainment, to attend a Twins or Vikings game? How many are worried about the criminal trafficking that comes our way?

We hope Minneapolis understands its police situation. If the department remains as it is, it still needs reform and an influx of new agents with better training and new attitudes to serve the community. If a new Ministry of Public Safety is created, we hope that it will have the necessary police presence to deal with the current wave of violence.
