APPLETON, Wisconsin – The Finlandia University volleyball team (4-7) lost twice on day two of the Lawrence Invitational on Saturday at Alexander Gym. The Lions fell to Maranatha Baptist (2-9) and MSOE (8-5).

Baptiste Maranatha – L, 3-2 (17-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-14, 16-14)

In the first set, Maranatha Baptist quickly took a 5-1 lead. Finlandia roared back to tie the set at 10-10. After a time out, rookie Emily Wilson got a kill that started a straight six-point streak to effectively end the set.

Set two a rocking case up to 9-8. The Sabercats have scored four consecutive points to lead 13-8. The Lions got it wrong and rookie Emma DeKiewiet scored four straight points for a 14-13 lead.

The score went back and forth until 21-20, MBU. DeKiewiet smashed the ball from the block and served four straight runs to complete the set.

The third set was also a close affair with FinnU taking a 15-14 lead. Maranatha Baptist surprised Finlandia with eight consecutive points to take the lead.

In the fourth set, the Sabercats took a 13-4 lead to end it earlier.

In the fifth set, the Lions took an 8-4 lead following a freshman victory by Kennedi Eldridge. MBU had four straight games to tie it at 8-8. It was war after that.

Wilson hammered the ball to put FinnU on match point. Maranatha Baptist scored three consecutive points to end the game.

For Finlandia, Wilson had a good night with a career-high 25 kills, 20 digs and a .333 hit. Sophomore Joslynn Perala had 11 kills and 31 digs. Rookie Anna Navarro had 41 assists and 17 digs.

For Maranatha Baptist, Mattie Bumpus had 18 kills and eight aces while Melanie Woller had 13 kills. Sarah Wright has had 20 digs.

MSOE – L, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-19)

In the first set, MSOE took the lead with a 14-5 to start.

In the second set, the Raiders and Finlandia fought a tie from the start. Perala came in from the outside and blew the ball up along the line to bring the score to 12-10. MSOE landed a 10-1 flurry to gain control.

The third set saw the Lions show off SISU. FinnU forced a mistake to take a 12-9 lead. The Raiders returned with a 9-4 run to lead 18-16. Wilson found the back corner to tie the game at 18-18. MSOE scored four straight goals to effectively end the game.

For Finlandia, Wilson had 10 kills and 10 digs. It was his eighth consecutive double-digit kill and his 10th overall.

For MSOE, Quinn Borchert had 11 kills and reached 0.769.

Finlandia remains on the road, Saturday, September 25, facing Alma and Olivet. Matches are scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. EST, respectively.
