Eleven cities in Massachusetts will hold preliminary elections on Tuesday for positions such as mayor or city councilor.

Cities with elections are Attleboro, Beverly, Chicopee, Everett, Fall River, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, Newburyport, North Adams and Taunton.

The best candidates from these races will pass in the general election in November.

In Lawrence, acting mayor Kendrys Vasquez will face former mayor William Lantigua, in addition to three other candidates, for the seat of mayor.

Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan is running for another term in a four-man race that includes Cliff Ponte, the chairman of the city councilor who served as acting mayor after convicted criminal Jasiel Correia was removed from office.

North Adams will hold a historic election, with four women vying to become the city’s first female mayor.

Voters in Lowell will have the chance to vote for councilors at the district level for the first time. Lowell previously only had councilors elected by the entire city, but now, after a court challenge, the city will elect councilors representing specific neighborhoods. Lowell Districts 2, 3, 4, and 7 have races with three or more candidates, and any registered voter living in any of those four districts is eligible to vote in the preliminary elections.

Boston, with many other towns, held preliminary elections last Tuesday.
