Adam Duvall hit a huge home run in an equally massive fifth inning for the Braves, as a seven-run explosion in that inning helped Atlanta secure an 11-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The first flash point of this match came in the third inning, which is when both teams made their first steps at the scoreboard in it. In the upper half of the frame, the Braves pulled off timely strikes with two strikeouts. Luckily for the Braves, Marte got greedy and got kicked out in third place trying to turn him into a triple and it’s really a really good thing that this happened because Daulton Varsho went on with a triple. Huascar Ynoa therefore still had an opportunity to come out of the round with the game still tied.
Unfortunately, it just wasn’t in the cards for this particular round. Ynoa threw a slider that slid all the way down William Contreras’ glove and up to the safety net to bring in Varsho anyway. The Diamondbacks finished the inning with a 3-2 lead and it really felt like it was going to be another tense and nervous night at the stadium for the Braves.
Then the fifth round came through and things changed dramatically in favor of the Braves by the time they finished. It was almost as if the Braves lineup had collectively compiled all the data they needed on Humberto Mejia during his first two times in the order and applied that data to Mejia’s absolute demolition the third time around. Atlanta’s top seven hitters all made it safely and did so in order.
It included an equalizing double from Freddie, a simple go-ahead from Ozzie, Austin Riley’s third double of the game to give the Braves some breathing space, and then a totally galactic moon shot Adam Duvall to open the sleeve. Only a strikeout from William Contreras could even prevent the Braves from pushing the line relentlessly. By the time Contreras had taken out sticks, there had been a new pitcher in the game – and poor Taylor Widener was the one who was greeted into the game by Duvall.
Soler added a point following a forced strikeout, and then Freddie Freeman scored the seventh point of the set and the ninth point of the game for the Braves before Ozzie Albies took a contested third strike to end the game. handle immediately. It was encouraging to see William Contreras make it to the charts tonight, as he scored a brace in the seventh inning and then added a single in the ninth. Thanks to a hit single from Guillermo Heredia and a wild throw from Brett de Geus, he was able to break through the plate for the first time since June 18. Hopefully this is the start of Contreras doing better at the major league level. Plus, Eddie Rosario continued what has been two really lovely games for him, as he apparently “barely managed to keep this one fair”For a circuit before Contreras has fun.
The game ended 11-4 in Atlanta’s favor, and it was a productive night for the Braves, indeed. As things got underway at Chase Field, the Baltimore Orioles put the finishing touches on a 2-0 shutout win over the Philadelphia Phillies. It was imperative that the Braves take advantage of the gift the O gave them tonight and thanks to this huge fifth inning, they were able to do so.
The Braves are now three games ahead of the Phillies and will look to continue to profit from any other mistakes from Philadelphia going forward. The Braves got the win and most of all they needed an emphatic victory like this – one that will hopefully wake up the bats and move them forward as they enter the final stage of the season.
