Cortaca will be part of the very first IC Alumni Homecoming weekend in New York

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any bigger, the football rivalry between Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland does just that, with today’s announcement that both institutions have accepted an invitation from the New York Yankees organization to play the 2022 Cortaca Jug in history Yankees Stadium. The match will take place on Saturday, November 12, with a kick-off at 1 p.m.

The Ithaca Bombers and Cortland Red Dragons played the 2019 game across the Hudson River at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as Record-breaking Division III crowd of 45,161 fans watched IC win 32-20. Once described by Sports Illustrated as “the country’s biggest little game,” the Cortaca Jug was not challenged in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. This fall’s game will take place on November 13 at SUNY Cortland.

Ithaca and Cortland will each receive tickets in fall 2022 to sell to their students, faculty and staff for $ 24.50. Tickets go on sale to the general public this fall, Tuesday, November 16, 2021, with most seats priced from $ 24.50 to $ 69.50. All tickets will be delivered digitally and mobile presentation will be the only method of entry.

Ithaca College will also be hosting its 2022 Alumni Back-to-School Weekend from November 10-13 in the Big Apple, with a series of events planned to reflect this unique location.

While the stadium is best known as the home of the Bronx Bombers baseball, it has also seen its share of memorable soccer matches and currently hosts the annual New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

According to Mark Holtzman, vice president of non-baseball sporting events for the Yankees, it was watching the success of the 2019 Cortaca Jug that inspired the organization to extend the invitation to both schools.

Alumni Weekend in New York

And while the Cortaca Jug will be a centerpiece of the Ithaca College Alumni Reunion weekend, it will by no means be the only game in town, with the annual Alumni Awards celebration, induction ceremony at the Sports Hall of Fame and dinners and receptions for the class years celebrated among the planned events.

The 2022 competition will serve as the home game for Ithaca College and will mark the 63rd time the two schools – located just 21 miles apart in upstate New York – have faced each other for the Cortaca jug.

The rivalry began in 1959, when friends and respective team captains Tom Decker of Cortland and Dick Carmean of Ithaca picked up a jug at a garage sale to serve as a prize for the winner of the annual match-to-school game. Each year’s result is painted on the pitcher – the first one ran out of room for scores by the mid-1980s, and teams are now on their third pitcher. Ithaca is currently leading the Cortaca Jug 37-24 series.
