A group of 70 names in bold signed a letter organized by the nonprofit CARE and the organization’s global advocate, Iman, to urge world leaders to step up global immunization efforts. The letter, first published this morning by The New York Times, arrives in time for the United Nations General Assembly and the COVID-19 Global Summit hosted by President Joe Biden.
She urges world leaders to meet a goal set by the World Health Organization of providing enough vaccines to 70 percent of the world’s population by 2022. COVID-19 is now a pandemic of human-caused apathy. Only 2% of people in low-income countries received a single dose, leaving the world’s most vulnerable to COVID without any protection. This situation also allows new variants, like Delta, to emerge and devastate the lives of millions of people.
We join CARE in calling on world leaders to make 7 billion doses of vaccine available by the end of 2021, and 7 billion more doses by mid-2022 to fully immunize 70% of the world by the end of 2021. ‘next summer.
To achieve this, the global community must also invest in last-mile delivery systems, public education, and frontline healthcare workers to get vaccines from the tarmacs to guns. Millions of doses could be wasted because low-income countries do not have the support they need to immunize vulnerable people.
