Durham, North Carolina – Sixty UNC Health employees have quit rather than getting vaccinated against the coronavirus, health system officials said on Tuesday.
System officials had given workers until Tuesday to get vaccinated or face layoff, but they pushed that deadline back from Monday to November 2. Over 1,000 employees are now in place. probation and have six weeks to get vaccinated or lose their job.
“We never expected that we would be outside A C Medical Center in the evening of [Sept.] 21 asking people to hand in their ID badges, ”said Dr Matt Ewend, chhead of clinic for A C Health. “There would always be a time when there were consequences, but people would have the opportunity to correct their actions, to comply and to stay with us.”
The Duke University Health System also set a deadline on Tuesday for its employees to get vaccinated, and officials are meeting that deadline.
“Really, it’s a matter of security. We don’t want to lose anyone because of this and we have to make sure that we are able to care for our patients safely, ”said Katie Galbraith, president of Duke Regional Hospital, Durham.
Duke Health officials said 98 percent of employees have been vaccinated or received a medical or religious exemption, leaving about 350 employees who have not yet complied with the mandate. But officials said many of them are new employees or people on leave, who will have more time.

Duke Health officials did not say whether any staff members had resigned due to the tenure.

WakeMed’s vaccination deadline for employees is November 12, and system officials said about 80% of their staff are fully vaccinated.
