An Idaho nurse who refused the COVID-19 vaccine and encouraged her family to do the same, even after her COVID-infected mother went into a coma, has died, according to her brother.
Daryl Rise told CNN that his older sister Natalie Rise has been the victim of misinformation.
“She was telling me not to get the vaccine,” said Daryl Rise. “I think it was because of the misinformation, I think it was falling into social media and negative bloggers, YouTubers.”
Idaho currently lags behind the rest of the United States, with just 40.8% of the population fully vaccinated compared to the still meager 54.7% in the country.
The COVID crisis happened quickly to the Rise family.
Daryl Rise told KXLY his mother was hospitalized with COVID pneumonia on August 10 after a week of illness and difficulty breathing. She was intubated and placed in an induced coma. A few days later, her sister fell ill and was hospitalized “just down the hall” from her mother.
Even in the hospital and on oxygen, the former nurse told her younger brother not to get the shot.
Natalie Rise, 46, a mother of 10-year-old twins with special needs, died Aug. 22 in Coeur d’Alene, which continues to see an increase in the number of cases as the entire state is overwhelmed. A day later, the Food and Drug Administration gave full approval to the Pfizer vaccine, the same day Daryl Rise said he received his first vaccine.
“I got it out of fear,” he said.
The Idaho man said his mother, who was recovering and had come out of a coma, had not decided to get the vaccine.
Whether or not her mother is following her lead, Rise encourages others to already get vaccinated.
“We hear all these doctors and professionals who have all this education and they are basically begging us to get vaccinated. The people who tell us not to do it, they’re not as educated as these doctors, and they follow social media. It doesn’t matter whether we are a donkey or an elephant. It’s a personal choice, but the numbers don’t lie, ”Daryl Rise told KXLY.
