DENVER – Cody Bellinger’s misfortune continued on Tuesday when he was struck from the Dodgers roster on Tuesday against the Rockies and placed on the 10-day injured list with a left rib fracture. Luke Raley has been recalled from Oklahoma City triple-A to take his place on the active roster.

Bellinger sustained the fracture on September 13 when he collided with Gavin Lux in left center field converging for a flyball. The incident did not cause immediate concern. Bellinger stayed the game and played in the Dodgers’ next three games.

But the discomfort became unbearable on Friday in Cincinnati, prompting tests on Saturday, which revealed the fracture. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on Saturday it was an undisplaced fracture. He described it as “benign” and said he expected Bellinger to play on Sunday.

Bellinger did not play on Sunday. Two days later, he is on the injured list for the third time this season, with his fourth major injury since the previous playoffs.

Belllinger dislocated his shoulder crushing his forearms with then-teammate Kiké Hernández in Game 7 of the National League championship series. He survived his injury but underwent surgery in November and was not allowed to participate in spring training games until mid-March.

Then Bellinger suffered a broken fibula when a pitcher stepped on his leg in the Dodgers’ Game 5 of the season on April 5. He missed almost two months. He missed another two weeks in June with a hamstring injury.

During that time, Bellinger has been, by most statistical measures, the majors’ worst hitter this season. The 2019 National League MVP is beating 0.150 with nine homers and a 0.529 based percentage plus strokes in 89 games.

He ranks last in the majors in batting average and base percentage among players with at least 300 home plate appearances. Its OPS is the second lowest.

Without Bellinger, Mookie Betts will move to center field and Raley will play right field on Tuesday. This will be Raley’s first appearance in majors since July 27.
