PARKERSBURG – Criss Elementary was one of three schools in West Virginia recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools on Tuesday.
Recognition is based either on a school’s overall academic performance or on progress made in reducing achievement gaps among subgroups of students, according to a statement from the US Department of Education. Criss was honored in the Exemplary High Performance School category.
“This could not have been achieved without the combined efforts of all staff, students, parents and community members” Criss principal Heather Grant said in a statement from Wood County Schools. “We have worked extremely hard to move from the 220th academic rank in the state to the top 20 over the past four years.”
U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona on Tuesday recognized 325 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2021 during a visit to one of the winners in Illinois.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Criss Elementary School, the administration, teachers, staff, students and the community. “ Wood County Schools Superintendent Will Hosaflook said. “Everyone who works together is what makes a great school, and Criss is a wonderful example of the kind of dedication and cooperation we see in Wood County schools. “
Next week, Criss will host a series of Spirit Week events in honor of the recognition.
“I warmly congratulate the Criss family for their unwavering dedication to providing our students with the best possible opportunities for success” Grant said.
The other recognized schools in West Virginia were Crescent Elementary in Raleigh County and Rock Branch Elementary in Putnam County.
The delegation from the US State Senate congratulated the schools.
“The recognition of the National Blue Ribbon Schools is an incredible honor, and I am delighted that three schools in West Virginia are recognized for their academic excellence and tireless work in providing all students with an excellent education, regardless of background. “ said Sen. Now in its 39th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has awarded approximately 10,000 awards to over 9,000 schools.
