(AP) – Facebook’s semi-independent supervisory board has announced it will review the company’s ‘XCheck’ system following a Wall Street Journal survey in the use of this internal system which has exempted high level users from all or part of its rules.
The board said on Tuesday it planned to have a briefing with Facebook on the matter and “will report what we hear about it” as part of a report it will release in October. It can also make other recommendations, although Facebook is under no obligation to follow them.
The Journal report found that many VIP users abuse the system, “posting material comprising harassment and incitement to violence which would generally result in penalties.” For some elite users, Facebook’s rules don’t seem to apply. Facebook Inc. had told the Journal that the system “was designed for an important reason: to create an extra step so that we can accurately enforce policies on content that may require greater understanding.” The company added that the criticism about it was “fair” and that it was working to correct it.
A Facebook representative declined to comment further on Tuesday.
The Journal’s report, the board said, drew “renewed attention to the seemingly inconsistent way the company makes decisions, and why greater transparency and independent oversight of Facebook is so important to users. “.
