Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday announced a $ 16.7 billion budget plan for 2022 that relies on hundreds of millions of dollars in federal COVID-19 relief funding to close Chicago’s budget gaps, increase police spending and invest in neighborhood-by-neighborhood community programs.
“No one should ever doubt our courage and determination,” Lightfoot said in his budget speech Monday. “And I also know that at this particular time there are other inescapable truths. Our people are also suffering and in need of continued support and healing.”
Of the nearly $ 2 billion in federal pandemic relief provided to the city, Lightfoot proposes to spend $ 782 million on revenue shortfalls in 2021.
The mayor’s budget proposal increases police funding in 2022 to $ 1.9 billion from the $ 1.7 billion allocated to police the previous year.
