Chargers vs Chiefs clashes: Justin Herbert, the offense seeks to improve in the red zone

When the Chargers have the ball: Scoring touchdowns on just three of 10 trips, the Chargers this season are often gone the red zone red face. Defensively, however, Kansas City was worse off. The Chiefs gave Cleveland and Baltimore an eight-to-eight combined in the red zone to open the season. The Chargers were productive moving the ball but not scoring. They only have three touchdowns despite an attack that involves Justin herbert. Kansas City has already given up nine touchdowns. The Ravens scored on five of their last six possessions last week before running out of time in a 36-35 victory. Herbert played at a high level, with back-to-back 300-yard games while skillfully escaping the pressure. “We distribute the ball in a uniform, balanced way, sending it to a large number of different people”, Coach Brandon Staley noted. “I really like the way we are pitching football right now.” Running more efficiently, especially in the red zone, could help point production. The chefs have been accommodating in this regard. Playing against strong running teams from the Browns and Ravens, Kansas City allowed 404 rushing yards to finish last in the NFL. That’s not a prediction, just a fact: The Chargers haven’t had a 100-yard rusher since Dec. 8, 2019, when Austin Ekeler totaled 101 in Jacksonville.
