The Los Angeles Dodgers have suffered a series of injuries this season, the most recent being that of Cody Bellinger who sustained an undisplaced fracture to his left ribs. This required another stint on the 10-day injured list, which was offset in some ways by the return of AJ Pollock.
Pollock, who suffered grade 2 right hamstring strain on September 4, was originally scheduled to be activated for the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. His schedule was then brought forward one day, and changed again because of Bellinger’s injury.
Pollock hit by pinch in his first comeback, then started three of the next four. He suffered an injury in the eighth inning of Sunday’s win over the Diamondbacks when he was hit by a pitch in his right hand.
Pollock waved to the dugout and was controlled by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and coach Yosuke “Possum” Nakajima while descending the first base line. Pollock initially stayed in the game before being substituted in the lower half of the inning.
“He agrees. It put him on that middle joint. I think it grazed him, I don’t think it made him too good,” Roberts said after the win. So I’m expecting him to be there on Tuesday We dodged a bullet right there.
“AJ continues to take good hitters, so we have to keep him on the court. “
Pollock is enjoying his best season since an All-Star campaign with the Diamondbacks in 2015. Earlier this year, Roberts touted him as a “backbone” for the team and regularly emphasized the importance of Pollock.
Pollock grateful for versatility
Although he missed several weeks due to hamstring strain, Pollock was activated without going to rehab. Instead, he took part in mock games at Dodger Stadium and Camelback Ranch, and appreciated that the team allowed a different recovery process than normal.
“Hats off to the organization for letting me do this. Honestly, I wanted to stay in LA. There were people to work on me. It was great for me to be able to stay back and work. They let me do it, which is a great credit to them, ”Pollock said.
“There are a lot of organizations that would say you have to do ‘that’, and they were open-minded. I appreciate that. Then they got creative with how I can be at batting. There were a few guys from Rancho who had to throw in a bullpen, and both of them walked in and were able to give me a good look. It was fun.
“They were delighted to be there and they helped me a lot. It was a big team effort. I’m very grateful for allowing myself to do this, and I think that’s a big reason why I’m playing here so early.
