Mysterious salmonella epidemic: what is the cause?

One in progress salmonella outbreak has spread to 29 different states and is from an unknown food source.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said at least 279 people had been sickened by a new strain of salmonella, called oranienburg. A total of 26 of those people were hospitalized with the outbreak. There have been no deaths, however.

The CDC also said it did not know which food triggered the outbreak.

However, the CDC said the strain was found in a take-out condiment cup containing cilantro and lime. The infected person said the container also contained onions.

  • “Because multiple foods were present in the container and in the sample that was tested, it is not possible to know which food was contaminated,” the CDC said.
