Brinker International Inc., parent company of casual dining brands Chili’s Grill & Bar and Maggiano’s Little Italy, released its first sustainability report on Thursday, noting that in 2021, it increased the diverse representation in restaurant operations of 35% and increased the average hourly wage, including tips, to $ 16.95.
Dallas-based Brinker, who also owns It’s Just Wings and Maggiano’s Italian Classics virtual brands, has set new goals to increase diverse representation in restaurant operations to 40% by 2025 and increase average hourly wages, tips included, to $ 18 an hour by fiscal 2023.
The full report, which can be downloaded from the Brinker website, describes progress and goals in four areas: people, food, world and governance.
“Creating a better world is part of our culture and our passion to make people feel special,” said Wyman Roberts, President and CEO of Brinker, in a statement.
“We know that making people feel special goes beyond what we do for individual team members and guests to what we do for the communities and the world they live in,” Roberts said. “This report represents a new chapter in our commitment to environmental, social and governance issues and reports. “
Among the highlights of the progress made in fiscal 2021, Brinker said:
- launched three new programs on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: A Leadership Listening Series, Leaders Leading Through Diversity, and a Cohort of Executives.
- awarded hourly team members over $ 3.8 million in retention bonuses and increased average hourly wages, including tips, to $ 16.95.
- promoted 2,011 hourly team members to leadership positions as certified team leaders.
- raised $ 10 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, based in Memphis, Tenn., towards a total contribution of $ 88 million throughout the partnership.
Brinker also described other goals, including:
- increase the representation of women in the management of catering operations to 45% by fiscal year 2025.
- Increase the Chile CEO’s total income to an average of $ 100,000 by fiscal year 2025.
- promote at least 80% of Chile’s managers and 90% of Chile’s CEOs among internal candidates in fiscal year 2022.
Brinker International has more than 1,600 restaurants in 29 countries and two US territories.
