ALPENA – Several large projects in Alpena will receive hundreds of thousands of dollars thanks to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s approval of the 2021-2022 state budget.

The Boys and Girls Club of Alpena will receive $ 500,000 for the construction of a new club on the site of the former East Campus / Alpena Catholic Central campus on Miller Street. The new club will almost triple its current space and provide expanded services to support the organization’s mission.

The launch of the project is scheduled for January next year.

In a press release Thursday, executive director Brad Somers said he was grateful to those in Lansing who supported the project and helped secure the funding. The money, Somers said, will help provide Alpena’s children with the kind of club they deserve and need.

“We express our gratitude to Representative Sue Allor and Senator Jim Stamas for their leadership and advocacy on behalf of the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena,” Somers said. “These funds bring us one step closer to realizing our dream of creating a first-class community facility offering high-quality programs to empower youth and nurture the next generation of leaders. “

Allor said bringing as much money as possible to northeast Michigan is always a top priority, especially money that will be used to improve the lives of children.

“I have always been a strong advocate of ensuring that as much of our tax money as possible goes back to our region,” said Allor. “For this reason, I am delighted that this project, which directly benefits the children of our community and will have a positive impact on their future, has been chosen to be funded in this project. ”
