MNR has temporarily closed the North Pioneer Road firing range in Benzie County to all target fire.
The move comes after the DNR received safety and security complaints that include several appeals about bullet holes in a nearby house. Complaints about projectiles leaving the target range and unsafe conditions have been received by both the DNR and the Benzie County Sheriff’s Department.
“Public safety must be the No. 1 concern and responsibility in outdoor recreation, especially with shooting sports,” said DNR Director Dan Eichinger.
“Everyone should have the opportunity to safely enjoy Michigan’s public lands, but with that opportunity comes the responsibility to treat both the land and other users with respect and courtesy,” Eichinger said. “We will not reopen this area to target shooting until the public safety concerns have been fully addressed and rectified.”
The emergency order is in effect for 90 days. During this time, MNR will assess next steps that would eliminate the possibility of visitors firing at targets from anywhere other than specified areas.
The order comes after repeated efforts by the DNR to implement safety-conscious shooting practices at the site, including:
- Post signs instructing visitors to pull from the bottom of the hill rather than from the raised parking lot.
- Moving benches and shooting tables at the foot of the hill.
- Target shooters awareness by local staff of the Law Enforcement Division of MNR to encourage responsible use of the area.
The shooting range is located at 2167 North Pioneer Road in Beulah.
