The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating an outbreak of salmonella infections in 35 states, including Alabama.
The CDC said there had been at least 419 confirmed cases associated with the outbreak with 66 hospitalizations and no deaths. Alabama is listed among the states with 1 in 5 cases, although health officials have said the number of sick people is likely much higher as many recover without seeking medical treatment and are not tested for Salmonella. .
No food source has been identified as the cause of the outbreak, the CDC said.
Most people infected with Salmonella have diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually appear within 6 hours to 6 days of exposure, and most people recover without treatment after 4 to 7 days.
Some people – especially children under 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems – may have more serious illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization.
Prevention tips
To prevent the spread of Salmonella, the CDC has the following tips:
- To clean: Wash your hands, utensils and surfaces often. Rinse fruits and vegetables under running water before eating, cutting or peeling them.
- Separate: Keep foods that will not be cooked separate from raw meat, poultry and seafood.
- to cook: Use a food thermometer to make sure you have cooked your food at a temperature high enough to fill the sprouts.
- Coldness: Refrigerate perishable foods within 2 hours (within 1 hour if the food has been exposed to temperatures above 90 degrees F, such as during a picnic). Defrost food in the refrigerator, not on the counter.
