Michigan reports 8,058 new COVID cases, 79 deaths – an average of 4,029 cases per day

DETROIT – Michigan reported 8,058 new COVID-19 cases and 79 virus-related deaths on Friday – an average of 4,029 cases in the past two days.

Friday’s update brings the total number of confirmed COVID cases in Michigan to 1,030,633, including 21,077 deaths. Those numbers are up from 1,022,575 cases and 20,998 deaths as of Wednesday.

The deaths announced on Friday include 42 identified during a review of vital records.

Testing has grown to around 30,000 diagnostic tests reported per day on average, with the 7-day positive rate at 9.3% from Wednesday, slightly lower than the previous two weeks due to the increased volume of tests. Hospitalizations have been increasing for several weeks.

The states 7-day moving average for daily cases was 2,935 on Wednesday – the highest since early May. The 7-day average of deaths was 32 on Wednesday and has been rising steadily for weeks. The state’s death rate is 2.1%. The state is also reporting “active cases,” which were listed at 85,700 as of Wednesday.

Michigan has reported more than 9.9 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine administered as of Friday, with 67.6% of 16+ residents have received at least one dose during 58.9% of 16+ residents are considered fully vaccinated. Over 103,000 booster doses have been administered.

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 40.9 million cases have been reported in the United States, with more than 659,900 deaths reported by the virus. Worldwide, more than 3.5 billion doses of vaccines have been administered, including over 370 million doses in the United States alone.

In the world, more than 224 million people have been confirmed infected and more than 4.6 million died, according to Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are certainly much higher, due to the limited testing, the different ways nations count the dead, and the deliberate underreporting of some governments.
