The Oregon Health Authority on Friday announced 24 deaths from COVID-19 and 1,686 new cases, with the average number of daily cases finally falling below the peak of 2020.

The summer delta-fueled surge wreaked havoc in Oregon, resulting in an average daily case count that, over the past seven weeks, had remained above the winter high.

Oregon now has an average of 1,531 cases per day over the past week. Friday marked the first time since August 11 that the moving average has fallen below last year’s high of 1,534 average daily cases set on December 5.

The summer wave resulted in record hospitalizations, and September produced more COVID-related deaths than any other month but one.

The Oregon Health Authority released a COVID-19 forecast on Friday showing more declines through mid-October. Depending on the transmission rate, Oregon could see 1,515 daily cases up to 955 daily cases. Hospitalizations are also expected to decrease.
