Motorcyclist dies in crash after police chase in Lakeville and Middleboro

A motorcycle driver was killed Friday night after hitting a telephone pole in Middleboro following a brief chase with an officer, police said.

A Lakeville police officer attempted to stop the motorcycle around 11:45 p.m. after seeing it traveling at 68 mph in a 40 mph zone on Lakeville Main Street, a statement said. from Lakeville and Middleboro Police.

The officer followed the motorcycle down Main Street but dropped the chase for safety reasons after the driver turned to Vaughan Street in an attempt to escape, police said.

After ending the chase, the officer followed the path of the motorcycle and discovered that it had crashed into a telephone pole just above the town line of Middleboro on Vaughan Street.

The driver of the motorcycle was taken to Morton hospital and later pronounced dead.

The identity of the driver was not immediately disclosed as police contacted family members. The accident is being investigated by the Lakeville and Middleboro Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police.
