THETFORD – Lebanon High school student Birhanu Harriman and White River Valley sophomore Anita Miller enjoyed a Saturday run in the woods.
Harriman was third out of nearly 700 boys and Miller 20th out of nearly 600 girls to highlight Upper Valley’s results in the 30th Woods Trail Run at Thetford Academy. The meet involved athletes from schools across New England on the three mile Dan Grossman Woods Trail in Thetford Hill State Park.
Harriman had the best day of any UV runner, posting a third time of 16 minutes, 43.97 seconds. Theftord senior Tobin Durham was 18th on his home run in 17: 17.24, and Ben Mattern, a sophomore from Thetford, was 99th (18: 55.04).
Miller excelled in her race, clocking 20: 38.94 for her 20th place finish in the girls. Thetford junior Madelyn Durkee led her team to 22nd place with a time of 20:56:57, good for 28th place overall.
The Lebanese girls placed 35th out of 53 teams and were led by Isabella Hastings 92nd (22:23:02). Woodstock was 40th and Hartford 41st. Hartford senior Bethany Davis was the first hurricane to cross the finish line in 126th place (22: 53.43), and rookie Myra McNaughton was the first for Woodstock in 176th place (23:35 , 81)
Mid-Vermont Christian’s top runner was senior Rachel Horner-Richardson, taking 47th place in 21: 33.73.
In the team results, the boys from Woodstock finished 21st, Thetford Academy 29th, Lebanon 30th and Hartford 36th. There are 55 teams that score.
The boys and girls were divided into five seed races determined by the times recorded this season.
NORTH SUTTON, NH – The Hanover boys won six of the top 10 places in a double competition in Kearsarge.
Caleb Zuckerman was second (18: 21.5), Ryan Fari fourth (19: 01.3), Jack Nolin sixth (19: 33.5), Alexander Valentino seventh (19: 47.5), Andrew Davis ninth ( 21: 03.0) and Nadeesh Jain 10th (21: 03.9).
Lauren Eiler placed third for the Hanover girls in 22:07, followed by Elizabeth Staats in fourth (23: 18.7) and Alya Wager in fifth (23: 44.1).
“The Kearsarge lead pair challenged Lauren, and she held onto them during the third mile,” said Hanover coach Eric Picconi. “Other riders have shone with their best times of the season. We’re going to build on that run as we look into October. ”
WOLFEBORO, NH – After placing third in the NHIAA qualifier in late September, the Royals’ Cole and Tanner Moulton repeated that result at the NHIAA State Championship tournament on Lake Wentworth on Saturday.
The Mascoma duo combined to finish second in the lunker competition (for larger fish) in the small and large mouth divisions, the latter reaching 4 pounds and 2 ounces. The Royals’ day started off slow but, according to coach Eric Moulton, a change in strategy late in the day saw the two anglers climb onto two schools of fish and hit their limit of eight fish, including the four. pounds landed in 54 feet of water. .
“As a coach I was very proud that the boys stayed focused and continued to fight on a difficult day,” said Eric Moulton. “While it was a bit disappointing to finish right off a banner, the fact that they were able to bounce back from a rough start seemed like a win to me.”
Keene won the state crown, followed by Kearsarge.
SALEM, NH – The Lebanon and Stevens golf programs have combined to send three competitors to the NHIAA Women’s Golf Championship in the Campbell Scottish Highlands.
Lebanese Greta Barber was the only participant from the Upper Valley in the 18-hole championship flight, shooting a round of 112 to take 20th place. Carys Fennessy of Dover shot a 68 to 3 under par to win by five strokes.
Aubree Herzog (T-7th, 52nd) and Catie Bliss (T-19th, 61st) of the Cardinals both competed in the nine-hole medal division contested on CSH’s return nine. Brianna Caston of Plymouth won this title with a score of 8 of 43.
KINGSTON, NH – Senior Seamus Murphy rushed for three touchdowns, including one from 35 yards, and Brendan Logan caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Roger Lucas to mark the victory.
Sophomore Jeffrey Vidou hit a 40-yard rushing touchdown.
The defense was led by senior Colin Pierce, who had eight tackles. Hanover also recorded four sacks: two by junior Cam Bonner and one each by juniors Patrick Elder and Monty Hanchett.
Hanover (5-0) hosts Milford on Friday night.
BRANDON, VT – The Yellowjackets have scored goals by several different players, including two touchdown assists by senior Ben Gilbert and a touchdown and interception return for another touchdown by senior Austin Gauld, in their last victory in Division III of the VPA.
Senior Keegan Batchelder and junior Travis McAllister each had a touchdown, and junior Maison Fortin ran for a touchdown and caught a pass for another score. Windsor led 35-0 at the half.
Windsor (5-0) receives Poultney on Saturday.
WEST CANAAN – The Royals (2-2) moved within half a game of an NHIAA Division IV playoff position with a solid home win over the Green Giants.
Mascoma is scheduled to visit Epping-Newmarket on Saturday. The EP game on Saturday with fourth-placed Raymond has been called off.
NORTH CLARENDON, Vermont – The Olympians came close to their first win of the season with a one-point loss to the Minutemen.
Oxbow (0-4) is at Woodstock on Friday.
SOUTH ROYALTON – The Raptors (4-4-1) pounced on the Wildcats (6-2-0) for two goals in the first 20 minutes and mounted their defense to avenge a one-goal loss to WRV.
Ryleigh Butler (unassisted, 11th minute) and Elisia Sonsalla (19th, assisted by Lindsay O’Hearn) launched Rivendell. Jillian Barry brought White River Valley back just before halftime on an assist from Anna Stratton, but Harper Traendly restored the two-goal cushion on a Butler assist nine minutes into the second half.
Savannah Gray stopped 16 shots to preserve the victory of Rivendell, who hosts Sharon on Tuesday. WRV is also in action on Tuesday, hosting Leland & Gray.
BRADFORD, VT – Sophia Hayes’ unassisted goal in the last minute of regulation gave the Olympians (5-3-1) a share of the booty.
Hayes converted to a scorching goal after a corner kick to tie a 36th-minute debut for Gabby Spaulding from Enosburg. Oxbow coach Dan Thomas praised Hadlee Allen and Aivree Bruce for their defensive play in midfield, Maggi Ellsworth for replacing a sick captain and Hazel Fahey for his sweeping efforts.
Oxbow heads to Twinfield on Tuesday.
CANAAN WEST – Playing for the first time since their historic first win on Wednesday, the Royals have delivered two straight hits.
Sophomore Emily Seiler scored from a free kick just outside the box with two minutes remaining to reduce the Spartans’ lead.
Mascoma (1-9-0) will host Fall Mountain on Tuesday.
LEBANON – The Raiders led 3-0 at halftime after goals from sophomore Nick Brill in the ninth minute, senior Krists Putans in the 18th minute and Simon Amaro in the 31st minute.
Putans scored his second goal in the 44th minute to complete the scoring.
Amaro, Bennett Hewett, Otto Bourne and Griffin Auch collected assists that day.
Easton Wykes three stops for Lebanon in 70 minutes in goal, and Zach Aldrich two stops in 10 minutes. For Stevens, Cooper Moote made seven saves in 65 minutes and Maddox Foster made three saves in 15 minutes.
Lebanon (9-1-0) welcomes John Stark on Tuesday. Stevens (3-5-0) visits Souhegan on Monday.
SOUTH ROYALTON – Junior Zach Armstrong put WRV on in the 25th minute on a rebound, but Proctor equalized him 10 minutes later for the final score.

TOWNSHEND, VT – Junior Nolan McMahon scored two goals and the Hurricanes improved to 6-3-0.

Senior exchange student Andre Damiani de Souza scored his first goal for the team in the 57th minute. Junior Blaine Gour made four saves and his first shutout.

WOODSTOCK – Rookie Gabriella Gilbert scored from a penalty corner with the help of seniors Karen Kapuscinski and Peyton Richardson with 44 seconds left in the third quarter for the win.
Woodstock coach Leanne Tapley said her team showed strong defense, turning off 15 of Windsor’s 16 corner games. Among goaltender Audrey Emery’s three saves, there was a slip past the goal to prevent the Yellowjackets. Tapley also credited the game to Reese Perry of Windsor for leading the Jacks’ defense.
Windsor improved to 5-3-1 and hosts Fair Haven on Tuesday. Woodstock slipped to 4-3-0 and will play in Hartford on Wednesday.
CANAAN WEST – Mascoma hit back to tie the game in the third quarter on a second-year Kylie Rogers goal before Bishop Brady scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
Coach Jenn Hammond said the Royals fought hard the entire game, but without a lot of substitutes they got tired in overtime.
“This is our best performance of the season,” said Hammond. “The girls played the whole game and as a coach I can’t ask them to give more than they did today. They did a great job, but unfortunately we may be short today.
Mascoma (1-9-0) surrenders to Stevens on Tuesday.
WEST CANAAN – After a straight set loss to PCA, Mascoma (4-6) will travel to Fall Mountain on Monday.
SUNAPEE – The Cardinals lost in straight sets, 25-10, 25-9, 25-6.
Stevens (0-10) will host Portsmouth Christian on Monday.
