Michigan’s football offense answered a few questions on Saturday, but its coaching staff may have created other questions as well.
The Wolverines beat the Wisconsin Badgers, 38-17, for the program’s first road victory in the series since 2001.
Michigan maintained control of the game throughout and pulled away once Wisconsin starting quarterback Graham Mertz left in the third quarter. UM dominated Wisconsin 25-7 and used multiple quarterbacks in the last two quarters.

Using a smuggler – first year JJ McCarthy – prompted a ton of questions, but we’ll get to that in a moment.
The victory was Jim Harbaugh’s first as an underdog on the road in seven seasons; rejoice Wolverines fans, this is one of the last times you will have to read this statistic. Badgers fans will be looking for answers, but with their starting QB injured their save had two turnovers in one half and the Badgers fell to 1-3 for the first time since 1990.
Social media praised Michigan’s defense (just 210 offensive yards allowed) and Cade McNamara’s performance, but much of the attention was focused on McCarthy.

McCarthy, a former five-star rookie, saw snaps start in the third quarter, ending 1 of 1 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball three times for seven yards and another score. McNamara, who has started every game this season, was 17-for-28 with a high of 197 yards and two touchdowns.
Still, fans wonder if McCarthy was prepared for a starting position – perhaps this year:
Few guys have their place after winning a match as convincingly as McNamara, according to a Wolverines Twitter segment. And all it took was one pass (okay, that was a very nice pass).
No matter the margin, someone has to squeeze in a shot at Harbaugh.
