New Jersey on Monday reported 1,111 other confirmed cases of COVID-19 and nine other confirmed deaths as the state marked 19 months since the first positive case was confirmed in March 2020.
The seven-day average for new confirmed positive tests fell to 1,606, down 10% from a week ago and 6% from a month ago.
The statewide transmission rate of New Jersey remained at 0.91 Monday for the third day. A transmission rate of less than 1 indicates that each infected person transmits the virus to less than one other person, which means the epidemic is no longer spreading.
“We continue to see the transmission rate holding below 1, and that remains a very good sign,” Gov. Phil Murphy said at a Monday afternoon briefing in Trenton. “But it’s only a matter of time before time forces more people to come indoors and to keep that number low and avoid another winter peak, we need everyone to not just do vaccinate, but we strongly encourage you to wear a mask and keep social distance when you are among a crowd indoors.
As of Sunday evening, 1,074 people were hospitalized with confirmed (1,001) or suspected (73) cases of coronavirus, state data showed. That’s an increase of 19 patients from the night before. The number has also mainly stabilized over the past month, with only slight increases and decreases over the weeks. There were 77 patients discharged in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday evening.
Among those hospitalized, 243 were in intensive care (eight more), with 135 on ventilators (two fewer).
The delta variant continues to dominate cases in New Jersey with nearly all cases sampled in the four weeks ending September 11.
School districts across the state have reported at least 39 outbreaks to school for a total of 219 cases, more than double the cases reported two weeks ago, according to the state’s dashboard. Positive tests include 37 for educators and other school staff and 182 for students.
School outbreaks are defined as three or more cases that are determined by contact tracing to have been transmitted between staff or students at school. They do not include the total number of cases among staff and students. For example, Toms River schools have had more than 264 positive students and 29 teachers since the start of the school year, but the state does not list any outbreaks or cases in Ocean County.
The positivity rate for tests carried out on Tuesday, the last available day, was 3.68%.
More than 5.89 million people who live, work or study in New Jersey were fully immunized on Monday. Over 6.52 million people have received at least one dose and over 180,000 people have received third doses or boosters.
All but three New Jersey counties continue to be listed as having “high” rates of coronavirus transmission, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The counties of Essex, Hudson and Passaic were recently downgraded to substantial transmission, but the CDC recommends that people in 21 counties wear masks for indoor public places, regardless of vaccination rates in the State.
