The number of newly identified coronavirus cases declined in Oregon for a fifth straight week on Monday, pushing average daily cases 36% below the summer high.
Oregon recorded about 10,400 cases in the past week, a drop of 9% from the previous week. This includes the 3,286 cases announced Monday by the Oregon Health Authority for the previous three days.
State health officials also reported eight COVID-19-related deaths on Monday.
Oregon’s summer rise in coronavirus and fall decline generally reflects the national trend. But the highly transmissible delta variant has proved particularly troublesome for Oregon, producing the state’s highest number of pandemic cases and hospitalizations, and the second highest number of deaths.
While confirmed and suspected infections have been declining for weeks, weekly rates of decline have been modest, ranging from a high of 11% to just 2%. The winter and spring peaks produced much larger declines, with new infections declining faster.
New forecasts suggest the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals will remain above pre-summer peak levels through December.
