Fourteen seniors were announced on September 24 as senior class marshals for the 2022 class.
Commissioners, who collectively make up the senior class committee, are responsible for organizing class-wide events leading up to the exercises starting in May. The committee also plans reunion events after graduation and coordinates fundraising efforts for gifts to seniors.
After two rounds of elections, open to all students of the 2022 class, Menatallah N. “Menat” Bahnasy ’22 and Ruth HM Jaensubhakij ’22 were respectively appointed first and second marshals.
Bahnasy, who received the notice by phone call Friday morning in the middle of class, said she was “really happy” to oversee the committee’s planning.
“What I’m looking forward to the most is to help reconnect our class,” Bahnasy said. “I think it’s really important for our class – not only to have opportunities to reconnect through events and other initiatives, but also to meet as many people as possible.”
Jaensubhakij said she looks forward to creating camaraderie within the class of 2022.
“Over the past year and a half our class has been very fractured, and now a lot of people are now juniors – there’s a whole bunch of people that were added to our class that were in the class of 2021.” , Jaensubhakij said. . “I’m really excited to bring people together and give us a sense of oneness as a Class of 2022.”
Bahnasy recognized the challenges presented by the pandemic and social distancing guidelines, which have reshaped the usual activities and events of Seniors’ Week.
“This pandemic is not over yet, and I think it’s really important to continue to follow the guidelines that have been given with the school,” Bahnasy said. “There are some really creative ways to stay engaged together. “
“I think we will have a lot of opportunities to be able to exceed the limits that we have had over the past two years,” Bahnasy added.
Arjun J. Prasad ’22, one of the six program commissioners, said he looks forward to connecting the 2022 class members, as seniors now and later as alumni. Program commissioners are those who rank third through eighth in the electoral process.
“One of my favorite things of my three years and a month now comes to meet such amazing people,” said Prasad. “Making people want to stay connected to each other and to the school that brought us all together – I think that’s what excites me the most.
In addition to the eight marshals, six seniors have been appointed Gift Marshals by the Harvard College Fund after an application and interview process. They will help lead the campaign for gifts for seniors.
In the coming weeks, class commissioners will interview candidates to make up the rest of the senior class committee: the secretary, treasurer, media team, and house representatives.
Abigail T. “Abby” Forbes ’22, a gifts marshal, said she hopes to change students’ perceptions of the senior gift.
“As a first generation low income student who is really passionate about activating resources and having everyone do the little things they can that will generate huge, huge opportunities over time, I wanted to really dismantle all the stereotypes that would keep people from feeling a part of the donation process, ”Forbes said.
“We’re the first class to have a year and a half away from campus, away from our friends,” Forbes also said. “
