A North Carolina mother remembers her 6-year-old son as a “very loving and sweet boy” after his death from complications from COVID-19.
Ethan Govan, a first year student in Charlotte, is one of the youngest in the state to die from the virus after his death on September 19. He had pre-existing conditions that made his illness worse, county health officials said.

Govan’s mother Sharon Huff said she will always remember her son’s cheerful demeanor and smiles.
“He loved to have fun,” she told WBTV. “He didn’t let anything stop him or slow him down. He was just a very loving and gentle boy.”
Huff said Govan “loved music, he loved wrestling, he loved school, he loved superheroes.”

Mecklenburg County Public Health Director Gibbie Harris told the outlet that Govan’s death shows COVID-19 can be a threat to anyone, even young children.
“There are situations where children are exposed who don’t have the capacity to fight this, and we can see since last week how dangerous this virus can be,” Harris said.

With children now accounting for 26.7% of all COVID-19 cases in the United States, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, Harris urges everyone to wear a mask and get vaccinated if they are eligible.
“It’s incredibly unfortunate in our community, and we all need to be part of the solution to prevent things from happening like this in the future,” she said.

Huff is having a funeral for Govan on Saturday and wrote in his obituary that he “was the life of any room he was in” and “very smart and charming”.
Govan Elementary School sent a letter to all families alerting them to his death, and Huff said she hoped her classmates “just remember how fun her son was,” “and to how much he loved life and let it live through them “.
