HOWLAND – What a difference a week makes. The Canfield Cardinals visited Howland on Tuesday, a week after sweeping the Tigers 3-0. While the outcome was the same, the Tigers fought one hell of a fight as Canfield won the All-American conference shock 26-24, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22.
“You can tell that Coach Florek definitely took them to training and made adjustments,” Canfield coach Brooklynn Scott said. “There were times when we couldn’t find any free space on the ground. I was impressed. They were much harder to play than last time.
Howland junior KyRenae Matlock had a huge back-tap, from behind the line, all the way to the net, and the Tigers had a 15-11 lead in the first set.
A big block from Addie Fonderlin got the Cardinals back in. Senior Abbie Householder served an ace and the score was tied 24-24.
The Tigers got tangled and the ball hit the ground. Householder, who led Canfield with 31 kills and 22 digs, closed it with a point.
“There were definitely ups and downs tonight. said Master of the house. “It was frustrating at times. It proved how much of a team sport volleyball is. Our chemistry has come together. We are all here to have fun and do our best.
Howland (7-12) did his best to win the second set. Senior Jamie DeSalvo started the Tigers with a block. Then second year Alyssa Massuci put it away with a kill.
“I think we played them extremely hard compared to a week ago”, Howland coach Amanda Florek said. “Seeing the caliber of a player that Householder is for them shocked us a bit at first. But, once we started, they knew we could stick with them. I’m excited about how we’ve reacted before. the playoffs.
Senior Ellie Moore (36 assists) dove to the ground in a total effort for Howland. However, after a blockade by Canfield’s Abby Muckleroy, the Cardinals took the lead 11-6. Alanna Lawson dug it out and had five aces for Canfield, but Lauren Roberts (a high of 19 digs) served the Tigers to a 23-23 tie.
The stampede from Parker Wilkins and Riley Kinkade (29 assists) helped the Cardinals escape in the third.
Howland’s Courtney Clark (18 kills) took a big hit on a late-game attempt but sent it too far before rebounding to convert a later attempt to help the Tigers take a 21- lead. 18 to the fourth.
“Howland gave us everything we could manage” Scott said. “If we had gone to five sets, I would have been a little nervous. They got away with it, and I think it’s important to be able to do that at this point in the season.
Ally Quirk and the rest of the Cardinals (12-7) have regrouped. They closed the match with back-to-back wins from Bella Bucciarelli and Householder to take the win.
