SOUTH HEIDELBERG TWP., PA – Police are looking for new and innovative ways to detain someone and not harm them.
“It’s as easy as holding a cell phone and it only takes one click to activate it,” said South Heidelberg Township Police Chief Leon Grim.
It’s called the BolaWrap, and it pulls faster than the eye can follow, like a thin wire wrapped around a person’s legs.
“Between the lack of use of force and a Taser and a gun,” Hamburg Mayor George Holmes said. “We want more options.”
Representatives from the Berks and Lehigh Valley Police Departments watched the product demonstration, including by 69 News photojournalist Jimmy Raxasena.
“Police officers have very limited tools these days,” Holmes said. “So it’s always good to see another tool, especially a non-lethal tool, that they can use.”
Police say it could be used in situations involving someone seeking to harm themselves or someone else and not complying with police orders.
When was it first seen in use by officers at Berks?
“As one of the other officers from a neighboring department pointed out, until we all get familiar with this, we may need to take additional training to make sure that all the other officers in our municipalities surrounding people know that we are deploying this device. ”Grim explained.
