WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Two potential overnight emergency calls occupied the Wolfe County search and rescue team on Tuesday evening.

The first call came around 8 p.m. from a 28-year-old woman who got lost in the Clifty Wilderness Region. With the help of coordinates from her navigation app – Alltrails – rescuers were able to determine that she was just above Eagles Point Buttress.

As the team prepared to respond, a second call was received from a group of Good Samaritans concerned about two hikers encountered on the Rock Bridge Trail. One of the hikers had knee problems and they didn’t seem familiar with the area, Wolfe County rescuers said in a post on social media.

The Good Samaritans were worried enough to have waited a few hours in the parking lot for the group to return. After dark and they didn’t see the group, they called 911.

Rescuers decided to send hasty teams to each location with a hike to Eagle’s Point Buttress along the Douglas Trail. The team found the lost woman near the waterfall below Eagles Point, the team said in their post.

Although she was advised to stay home, she made the reckless decision to try and find her own way out. Fortunately, she was on a trail and the team met her, rescuers explained.

The second team went to Rock Bridge Loop. Rescuers spoke with the Good Samaritans and located what they believed to be their vehicle as it was the only one left in the parking lot despite having an overnight pass.

Rescuers decided to hastily search for the Rock Bridge loop and a section of the Swift Camp Creek trail, but after two hours they couldn’t locate any hikers, the team said on social media.

After speaking with a US Forest Service law enforcement officer and unable to determine if the hikers were still on the trail, rescuers suspended the search operation to minimize the risk to rescuers.

The two teams cleared the area around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
