This week, Dr McGeorge addresses concerns about the COVID-19 vaccination – particularly those eligible for recalls – and the flu shot at the same time.
Can you get a COVID-19 booster and a flu shot at the same time?
Yes, you can receive your COVID reminder and your flu shot at the same time.
This is a change from the advice initially given when the COVID vaccines were introduced. At that time, it was recommended to wait 14 days between receiving the COVID vaccine and the flu shot.
Now that we know more about the side effects of the COVID vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have given the green light to get the COVID vaccine along with another vaccine at the same appointment.

Can I get my flu shot and my COVID-19 booster in the same arm?
Most people prefer to have the injections in different arms, but you can give them in the same arm if you want.
In this case, the injection sites should be at least one inch apart.
Will I have more side effects if I have both injections at the same time?
This is an important question to which we do not have a precise answer.
My opinion is that if you’re someone who usually has a terrible pain in your arm or body from the flu shot, and you’ve also had similar side effects when (and if) you got your COVID shot, you might feel more shabby if you get them both at the same time.
But some might also say that if you feel lousy why feel it twice.
If I don’t want to get the flu shot and get the COVID shot at the same time, how long do I have to wait between the two?
If you prefer to wait, the recommended time between doses is 14 days.

This was the initial waiting period advised by the CDC. It is also the time it takes for each vaccine to reach its full level of protection.
I am 71 years old and I need a flu shot, a pneumonia shot and a COVID booster. In what order should I receive these vaccines?
In this specific case, I would recommend doing the COVID booster, then waiting two weeks and getting the flu and pneumonia shots at the same time.
The main reason is that while it is entirely acceptable to get the COVID vaccine with another vaccine, the effect of getting it with two other vaccines is completely unknown.
I’m 79 years old and healthy, and got the flu shot last week as recommended by my doctor. He said I had to wait a month to get my COVID booster, but I read that it could be obtained at the same time, two weeks apart or one month apart. So naturally I am confused. Can you explain why there are so many differing opinions on this issue?
A d
Honestly, I don’t know why your doctor told you to wait a month. The current recommendation is that the hits can be given at the same time.
In general, the confusion comes from changing recommendations as more research has been gathered on how people respond to COVID vaccines and whether it is safe to give other injections at the same time. The final consensus is that it’s safe to get both hits at the same time.
The main reason for giving two vaccines in the same visit is to improve adherence and reduce the risk that one of the vaccines will be skipped if it is scheduled for a later date. There has been no medical benefit to giving two injections at the same time – it’s done just because it’s convenient.
If you don’t want to take both shots at the same time, which one should you take first?
Since we are seeing more cases of COVID-19 than flu right now, I would recommend that you get your COVID booster right away – but revert to that flu shot two weeks later. We are starting to see the first local cases of influenza.
