Mother of 2 dies of blood clots after receiving COVID-19 vaccine

SEATTLE (KING) – A woman in Washington state has died from rare blood clotting syndrome after receiving the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. Health officials say this is the first such death in the state.

Jessica Berg Wilson, a 37-year-old mother of two, died on September 7 from what her obituary says was “COVID-19 vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia.” This is a rare disease causing blood clots, seen in those who have received the J&J vaccine.

Only three other deaths from the disease have been confirmed nationwide.

Wilson’s obituary says that “in the last few weeks of his life … the world has turned dark with tough vaccination warrants.” She had opposed the vaccine, but did so to become a housewife for her two young children.

“In his mind, the known and unknown risks of the unproven vaccine were more of a threat. But slowly, day after day, his freedom to choose was taken away, ”the obituary said.

Wilson’s case sparked not only a wave of sympathy, but also attacks on the vaccination warrants, with one Facebook user calling them “unconstitutional, immoral and simply bogus.”

Without citing Wilson by name, King County Public Health claims that a woman this age was vaccinated on August 26.

The J&J vaccine has a known link to fatal blood clots in women, which led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to take a “break” in the spring to investigate. The agency ultimately determined that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks of catching COVID-19.

As of July 8, only 38 of the 12.5 million people who have received the J&J vaccine reported having these complications, and most of them have recovered.

Snohomish County Health Officer Dr Chris Spitters says the chances of getting blood clots from the J&J vaccine are rarer than serious complications from vaccines against other diseases that we readily accept.

“Even the best medical procedures carry risks,” Spitters said. “Despite this sad event and a handful of others like it, we must move forward as a society and take the path that brings the most benefits, the best risk / benefit ratio.”

Johnson & Johnson says the safety and well-being of everyone who receives any of its products remains their top priority. He indicates that any adverse event report involving people receiving the vaccine and that his own assessment of the report is shared with health authorities around the world.

The company strongly supports awareness of the signs and symptoms of rare events, as described in the Federal Drug Administration’s fact sheet for the vaccine, to ensure that they can be quickly identified and treated effectively.
