The second Huron League Jamboree of the 2021 season took place Tuesday afternoon at Sterling State Park in Monroe.
After winning the league’s first jamboree, which took place the week before, the Riverview boys again finished in the lead.
This time around, the Pirates finished with 43 team points. Monroe SMCC (56) and Monroe Jefferson (56) tied for second while New Boston Huron (90) finished fourth, Milan (123) took fifth, Grosse Ile (170) finished sixth, Flat Rock ( 182) finished seventh and Carleton Airport (226) finished eighth.
Riverview had three runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15 on a day where the competitors faced a wet course due to recent rain in the area.
Logan Ruffner of the Bucs was second overall, out of 87 riders in total, with a time of 17 minutes and 19.0 seconds. Ruffner was behind only Jefferson’s Carter McCalister (16: 44.3).
Blake Robinson of Riverview (18: 09.2) was eighth and he finished just ahead of teammate Hayden Holmes (18: 09.9) in ninth place. Gavin Shelton (18: 23.7) was 11th for the Bucs and Justin Shupe was 13th.
Huron had a top-five rider and each of the team’s top five placed in the top 40 percent of the field.
Leading the Chiefs was Ryan Morris (17: 39.4, 5th) and he was followed in the squad by Griffin Mentzer (18: 44.3, 14th), Breen Patrick (19: 06.8, 20th), Tyler Doss (19: 12.6, 21st) and Owen Lazenby (19: 46.9, 31).
Grosse-Île’s best player on Tuesday was Brenden Kapala (19: 19.6, 24th) and just behind him was his teammate Joey Gall (19: 19.7, 25th). Nicholas Griffin (20: 07.5, 37th) and Sam Vesperman (20: 15.2, 40th) also placed in the first half of the field and they were joined in the top five of the Red Devils by Arnav Verma (23: 11.4 , 70th).
Flat Rock got a top 10 runner thanks to Kenny Carlman (18: 10.2, 10th). Adam Brodie (20: 32.9, 43rd) was also in the first half of the field for the Rams and completing the team’s top five were Bob Breslin (20: 36.2, 46th), Grant Majerle (21:20 , 2, 54th) and Ryan Diebel (21: 28.4, 55th).

On the girls’ side of the jamboree, Grosse Ile (113) placed fifth for the day while Riverview, Huron and Flat Rock did not have enough runners to score as a team. The girls’ champion was Jefferson (57) while SMCC (77) was next in second and Milan (89) and Airport (89) tied for third.
The top rider in the area was Megan Woelkers of Flat Rock (21: 15.1, 6th). Elizabeth Anderson of Huron (21: 46.7, 9th) was also in the top 10 in a field of 55 competitors. In the front row, Tara Szuper (20: 41.2) from the Airport.
Grosse Ile placed four riders in the first half of the peloton, thanks to Anna Malonson (22: 49.00, 16th), Michelle Roque (22: 57.1, 17th), Taylor Karasinski (23: 24.3, 21st) and Cecilia Vesperman (23: 27.8, 22nd). The Devils’ fifth runner in the competition was Avery Brooks (27: 08.3, 43rd).
Riverview had a total of four runners who completed the jamboree course. Lexi Shaul (24: 45.5, 31st) led the team, she was followed by Daniela Hinojos (26: 05.7, 38th), Justiss Henderson (27: 14.1, 44th) and Alexa Stonier (28: 14.00, 48th). Keira Wood also started the race but was unable to finish due to an injury. In the first jamboree, Wood was 12th overall and was leading the Bucs that day.
Huron had four competitors in the competition. Breeann Roupe (23: 47.6, 26th) was second for the Chiefs, after Anderson, and was followed by teammates Cara Bean (25: 04.3, 33rd) and Emma Randles (30: 01.8, 54e).
Flat Rock had three runners entered to race at Sterling. Meredith Stull (22: 20.2, 12th) was second for the Rans, after Woelkers, and she was joined by teammate Grace Sturgeon (27: 33.7, 45th).
The Huron League Championship meet is scheduled for Thursday, October 21 at the Willow Metropark.
Riverview, Flat Rock and Grosse-Île will compete in the Wayne County Championship this Saturday in Willow.
