TheBurg was named “Press Organization of the Year” in Pennsylvania, an annual honor presented by the State Press Association.
The PA NewsMedia Association Foundation today announced the award, which recognizes news organizations “for overall excellence in all departments,” according to the foundation.
“It’s a very special honor,” said Lawrance Binda, co-editor and editor-in-chief of TheBurg. “This is a testament to the talent of our people and helps to affirm the work we do every day to make TheBurg a high quality information product for the greater Harrisburg area. “
TheBurg won the award for News Organization of the Year in the “weekly” category. Last year TheBurg was a finalist for the award.
PennLive / The Patriot News, also based in the Harrisburg area, took first place in the “multi-day” publications category, with the Philadelphia Inquirer as a statewide finalist.
A total of 120 news organizations across Pennsylvania participated, the PNA Foundation said.
“It’s remarkable to receive this recognition in Pennsylvania, which has so many great newspapers and news agencies,” said Binda.
The award is comprehensive, recognizing excellence in all aspects of a news organization’s operations, including editorial, art, design and sales.
“News organizations are judged not only for their journalism and writing, reporting, photography, videos, digital products and design, but also for their sales strategies, innovation, community impact and performance. relevance, integrity and initiative in the service of readers and the public, ”according to the PNA Foundation.
TheBurg began publishing in 2009 as a monthly community magazine for the greater Harrisburg area and has since expanded into daily reporting. It also sponsors and supports many events in the region, including 3e in the Burg, the monthly cultural and nightlife event in Harrisburg.
Over the past seven years, TheBurg has received over 100 individual press awards for reporting, writing, opinion, art, design, photography and advertising. TheBurg also received the 2018 Harrisburg Regional Chamber and CREDC Catalyst Award and the 2020 Distinguished Service to the Arts in the Capital Region Award from Theater Harrisburg (to be awarded in 2022).
