Fields named starting quarterback as Bears travel to Las Vegas | Chicago News

Bears fans have new reasons to be optimistic this season, even though the team is ultimately not fighting for the playoffs. Head coach Matt Nagy made the decision most spectators were asking for and named rookie quarterback Justin Fields as a starter going forward.

What does that portend for Sunday’s game as the Bears travel to Las Vegas to face the Raiders?

The three keys to James “Big Cat” Williams’ game.

1. Justin Fields has been named the Bears’ starting quarterback. Veteran Andy Dalton will now be the No.2 quarterback. It’s the right decision for the Bears. There was no reason to wait any longer. When I look at what Fields managed to do last week, I am in awe. I’m not talking about beating Detroit. I’m talking about his ability to move forward. Take that poor performance in Cleveland and put it behind him and start putting things back together to prepare for Detroit. That’s what coaches mean when you hear them talk about a player’s “short term memory”. It’s their ability to have a bad day or play, learn from it, forget about it and move on. His growth is going to be fun to watch. There will be ups and downs, but I can’t wait to see the quarterback and the man he will become.

2. Offensively, the Bears need to stay the course and build on what they’ve done well against Detroit, like running the outer zone and other runs below center, where Fields seems a little more comfortable. Also using the playing action to make the pitch a little easier for the young quarterback to read and by getting linebackers to step up and respect the run before falling into their cover. And more six, seven, and even eight man protections to allow Fields to look deep into the field.

3. After the Raiders’ loss to the Chargers on Monday night, Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa spoke about how they know if they hit Raiders quarterback Derek Carr a few times he would be shaken up and stop him. I have to believe Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai and every defensive player is drooling over the possibility of doing just that. The Bears’ first seven defense are due out on Sunday and put on a show and put Bosa’s theory to the test.

Prediction: Bear 20 – Raiders 24
