LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Art lovers say no other public art initiative in Lexington’s history has captured the hearts and imaginations of Lexingtonians and visitors alike Horse Mania has. made in 2000 and 2010.
Regional artists from Kentucky and surrounding states will be jurors in a two-step process to paint and beautify life-size fiberglass horses for an outdoor exhibit in Lexington, Ky., Over the summer and fall 2022.
While most of the horses are on display in downtown Lexington, selected public spaces at several other Lexington venues will also host the Horse Mania 2022 horses.
Fiberglass horses measuring six by eight feet have been ordered and will arrive in Lexington from mid-January to the end of January. Each horse weighs between 115 and 140 pounds. Artists are invited to submit designs to paint and embellish the horses for this large public art project.
The Horse Mania 2022 project will involve the horses being mounted on a concrete pallet; an identification plate will be affixed to the pallet naming the horse, the artist and the godfather.
The goal of the Horse Mania 2022 presentation is to instill in the Lexington community an understanding and enjoyment of public art, LexArts said in posting more details on the project.
LexArts implemented a two-part entry.
- A physical package must be delivered to LexArts no later than 5 p.m. on December 10, 2021 or postmarked no later than December 3, 2021.
- This Jotform must be completed by 5:00 p.m. on December 10, 2021.
Artists will submit physical drawings of their proposals:
- Artists can submit up to three drawings of horses.
- Drawings should be on 11 × 17 sheets and each on a separate sheet.
- Artists must include the name and name of the horse on each submission.
- Three horse poses are available for download at www.LexArts.org/HorseMania.
- Artists should include a written description of the horse (s), including the material they plan to use.

Additionally, this Jotform must be completed, including artist contact details, resume, and Horse Mania digital submissions. The Jotform must be completed by 5 p.m. on December 10, 2021.
LexArts will pay honoraria of $ 3,000 to selected artists matched with a horse sponsor.
In addition, artists will receive 10% of the net auction proceeds of their respective horse. If the horse is sold before the auction, 10% of the sale price will go to the artist.
The artists will be required to pick up and transport the horses to and from a warehouse in Lexington at their own expense. Unpacked horses weigh between 115 and 145 lbs. Horses can be moved in the bed of an 8 foot pickup truck secured to plywood and held by ratchet straps.
Artists are responsible for the cost of all materials associated with making the selected designs.
Payment will be made to performers at the time the completed horse is delivered to the designated warehouse.
