A veteran television reporter from a Missouri news station was fired last week for refusing to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Linda Simmons, who worked for 14 years at Springfield-based KY3, wrote on Facebook that she had requested a religious exemption from the vaccine mandate instituted by her station’s parent company – but was denied.
“I appreciate the freedom we all have to make our own informed decisions,” Simmons wrote in Friday’s social media post.
“I made an important decision and decided not to allow KY3’s owning company, Gray Television, to control my personal health choices. I did not respect their vaccination mandate after the refusal of my request for exemption, ”continued his message.
Simmons was one of three station employees who were lambasted for failing to comply with the company’s mandate, according to the Kansas City Star.
The reporter said in an interview with KSGF radio that she felt a “sinking feeling” when she learned that her exemption had been denied, the newspaper reported.
Over the summer, company executives unanimously agreed to make vaccines mandatory for all employees.
“The increasingly rapid spread of the coronavirus poses an unfair risk to colleagues and their family members who are not eligible for vaccination,” the company’s note to employees read.
Simmons told the newspaper his future plans are uncertain.
“I trust that I am doing God’s will for me. I hope he has some good plans in store !! she concluded her post on Facebook.
