Ted lasso Co-creators / stars Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt have spoken in several interviews about how they designed the comedy series to run for three seasons. As the success of Apple TV + heads into Season 3, the original vision has not changed, series executive producer / showrunner Bill Lawrence told Deadline in an exclusive post-mortem interview on the finale of season 2.
“What’s hard for me as a writer used to writing network comedies for me is that it was the end of the season, but the middle of the show,” veteran broadcast creator behind series like Scrubs and Cougar Hour, Deadline’s Mike Fleming said in the interview, which you can read here, along with a recap of the Season 2 finale.
Lawrence complied that when he and Ted lasso co-creators Sudeikis, Hunt and Joe Kelly presented the show, “we said this series would only last three seasons.”
Ted lasso became a commercial and critical success. It is believed to be Apple TV + ‘s most popular series and has just won seven Emmy Awards for its first season, including Outstanding Comedy Series. While the massive success didn’t change the original plan, it opened the door for the show to continue beyond Season 3.
“I would probably stay clean and say that even if Ted lasso Continuing, the story the editorial staff told had a beginning, a middle and an end for the first three seasons, ”said Lawrence. “And then it could get away from that.”
Lawrence also provided a target date for the Season 3 premiere.
“We’re still trying to be a year apart, so hopefully I will see the show again in the August type zone,” he said, noting that the show had to bypass the Olympics in its release plans. from season 2.
The end of season 2 left two popular Ted lasso characters, Team Therapist Sharon (Season 2 series regular Sarah Niles) and freelance sports writer Trent Crimm (Season 1 and 2 recurring guest star James Lance) at a crossroads and seemingly out of sight .
Lawrence confirmed that “both have important roles next year.”
