TILLEUL LAC – Richard “Grindstone” Strieter, 77, of Lake Linden, died at his home on October 6, 2021, following a long illness.
He was born on October 26, 1943, son of Walter and Lucille (Kaupila) Strieter. He graduated from Dollar Bay High School in 1961.
Rick joined the Navy Reserve while still in high school and continued active service in the Navy shortly after graduation. He served during the Vietnam era and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served aboard the USS Simon Lake, USS Canopus, USS Forrestal, USS John F. Kennedy and USS Independence. He retired from the Navy on March 31, 1980, after 20 years of active service.
From there Rick and his family returned to Upper Michigan. He attended Michigan Tech, where he obtained two associate’s degrees in civil and electrical engineering technologies. He then worked for the MDOT for 20 years as a road inspector, before retiring in 2007.
On July 2, 1966, he married Gloria Balowaara in Calumet.
He was a member of the Dollar Bay VFW, the American Legion Post 90, and the Copper Country Veterans, providing military rites to many deceased veterans in the area. He participated in many parades on July 4th. He had been a member of the First Lutheran Church in Dollar Bay until it closed. He was now a member of Faith Lutheran in Calumet.
He was predeceased by his parents, a son, Richard, Jr., a sister, Karen Statler, and a brother, Jan Strieter, Sr.
Richard is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Lake Linden; three children, Daniel (Julie) of Superior Twp., Juliana (Monica) Strieter of Arlington, Virginia, and Neil (Ashlee) of Coburntown; six grandchildren, Maddison and Leah Beach, Emma, Isaiah, Nathan and Sophie Strieter; three brothers, Ted (Kay), Doug (Jane) and Kim; three sisters, Kathy (Alan) Salmela, Kristine Michaelson and Susan Joy Strieter; sister-in-law, Sue Strieter; as well as many other parents.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 14 at Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with Pastor Jared Howard officiating.
Visitations will be from 11 a.m. until the start of the funeral at the funeral home.
Interment will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden, where Copper Country veterans will conduct military rites.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Lutheran Church for the roof support project.
