Mark Greene sips a cup of coffee at Average Joe’s. Although he chose black coffee this time, he shares that he also enjoys pure Caribbean black rum, which, of course, isn’t offered on the restaurant’s menu.
Your new neighbor has actually lived in Blue Earth for two and a half years. He moved here after living in many places around the world.
We sat down for a cup of coffee and a conversation about life in the world – as well as small town life – with Mark Greene on Wednesday October 6th.
What is your name?
“Marc Greene”, Marc confirms. “It’s English, so there’s an ‘e’ at the end, and it used to be written DeGrene. My family changed him to Greene a long time ago.
Will you share your age?
“Of course I am 67 years old” said Marc. “But I once told a little boy that I was 247 and he believed me.”
Where do you come from?
“My family was originally from England”, said Marc. “But I was born here in America in Connecticut.”
Since he’s lived in so many places around the world, Mark says it’s very difficult for him to answer the question of where he actually came from.
“I moved to Blue Earth from Waterloo, Iowa, where I had lived for about three years,” he said as an attempt to answer.
How would you describe this place in three words?
“Very good in the Midwest.”
Why did you leave?
“I only lived in Waterloo because it was the only place I could find a reasonable apartment when I returned to the United States after living abroad” Marc explains. “So when I bought a house in Blue Earth, I went there.”
How did you find Blue Earth?
“I found a house for sale here on the Internet”, said Marc. “But when I came to Blue Earth to watch it, I didn’t like it. But I liked the house nearby and bought it instead.
Who did you bring with you?
“Anybody,” he says. “I’m alone, but I really don’t mind being lonely. I stay pretty busy.
He adds, however, that since moving here, he has acquired a cat named Kiki from his neighbors.
How would you describe Blue Earth in three words?
“Small town environment. “
What do you like to do in Blue Earth?
“I work on my truck, my car and my motorcycle”, said Marc. “And my house. I guess I’m in the maintenance, restoration and upgrades.
You might have seen Mark driving around Blue Earth in his little white convertible or his Harley Davidson 350cc motorcycle.
What do you like to do wherever you are?
“The same thing,” Marc said quickly. “And I know it makes me sound strange, but I like to visit my pantry. It’s always full of very interesting articles.
Since spending years teaching English in several foreign countries, one thing he enjoys doing wherever he is is exploring the country where he lived at the time. This included riding his motorbike through the Cambodian countryside when he lived there.
What have you done for a job in your life?
“I am currently in my third career, which I call home restoration” Marc laughs. His first career was serving in the US Navy on submarines. It lasted 20 years. He was stationed in San Diego, Pearl Harbor and Connecticut.
“I was a second machinist in the Navy” he explains. “I ran the engine room on diesel submarines. “
Her second career has been teaching English in countries such as China, Chile and Cambodia.
“After the Navy, I went to Michigan Tech and got a degree in English and Intercultural Management,” he explains. “I taught English in Asia for quite a while, 15 years.
What would surprise people about you?
“That I have lived a life so different from theirs” he says. “But that I get along with people as well.”
How do you hope to surprise yourself in the future?
“I have what I want and what I need, so I really don’t need anything” he says. “But maybe I will go abroad again someday. But with COVID, who knows. “
He also talks about taking a motorcycle ride to Canada, Labrador.
Do you see a future for yourself here at Blue Earth?
“I consider it a fleeting adventure”, Mark says, after a break, to live in Blue Earth. “Who knows what’s going to happen.”
Are you a Jolly Green Giant or a Sprout?
“I enjoy life wherever I am”, Mark said mysteriously. “And always get the most out of it.”
Maybe that means he’s a bit of both.
What is your favorite green vegetable?
“Asparagus,” Mark responds quickly. “Fresh asparagus, what?”
What’s your favorite thing to eat that isn’t a vegetable?
“Prahok,” Mark said with a big smile. “It’s a Cambodian fish dish, like anchovies. I like it with hot sauce and dark beer.
What are you drinking today and what is your favorite drink?
Mark used to drink black coffee, but says he has a favorite drink from his many travels around the world.
“I appreciate the pure black rum from the Caribbean” he says. “I drank it in the Virgin Islands.”
