The Iowa Hawkeyes hosted the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday afternoon in a historic clash. For the first time in more than three decades, two top 5 teams met at Kinnick Stadium.
Much like the last time the Iowa No.1 beat Michigan No.2, the Hawkeyes won dramatically as the Iowa No.3 defeated No.4 Penn State 23 -20. It was Iowa’s fifth victory over a Top 5 opponent in their last six clashes inside Kinnick and Iowa’s second victory over a Top 10 team this season (and third in a top 20 AP team).
The victory, coupled with Alabama’s previous loss to No.1 at Texas A&M on Saturday night, propelled Iowa to 2nd place in the final polls on Sunday afternoon.
The AP’s No. 2 ranking marks the highest level Iowa has reached since that historic 1985 season. Iowa has only been in the top 2 nationally four times before this season, three of them. between them culminating at No. 1 in the AP. Only the 1961 season, in which Iowa entered the year as No. 1, saw the Hawkeyes finish outside the nation’s top 10. Iowa won the national championship in 1958 finishing 2nd in the AP.

The SEC runs all the conferences with seven teams ranked in the AP’s top 25, but it was the Big Ten that stole the show atop the standings. Although Georgia has supplanted Alabama in first place, the Big Ten now have half of the top 10 teams in the country. Iowa leads the way at No.2 with a Big Ten team stalemate in the back half of the top 10.
For their loss on Saturday, Penn State lost just three places in the standings. Ohio State, which briefly fell from the top 1 after its loss to Oregon (and a pair of wins over Akron and Tulsa), is back in 6th place – the highest of any Big Team. Ten East. Michigan’s victory over Nebraska pushed them up one place to eighth. It’s two spots ahead of Michigan State, which enters the top 10 after beating Rutgers this weekend.
Iowa is the only Big Ten West team to collect votes. The Hawkeyes have a 1.5 game lead over Minnesota and Purdue in the divisional standings. All other Western teams have lost at least two games this season and four of the members of the division have lost records this year.
The Hawkeyes are set to continue their quest for a Big Ten West title as they face the aforementioned Purdue Boilermakers in week seven. It’s scheduled for a CT kick at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
