Over the past week, the Lakers played three exhibition games, where they saw a lot of room for improvement. However, there was a lot of non-game content that we’ll recap here.
Lakers were not the favorites in many categories in GM’s annual survey
The Lakers could certainly use the latest GM poll as motivation as they look to win a championship this year. Although the survey saw the Lakers win their conference with 80%, they came in second to win the title at 17% (the Nets were favored 72%). Additionally, LeBron James was left out of the Top 6 to win this season’s MVP.
Jeanie Buss has made it clear that Pau Gasol’s jersey will be permanently hung from the rafters at Staples Center and reiterated that there has never been any doubt about it. Gasol helped the Lakers win two titles in 2010 and 2011.
DeMar DeRozan reveals he almost went to the Lakers
The USC product became straightforward with the Athletic’s Shams Charania and revealed how he spent time with LeBron James on the verge of almost returning home and playing for the Lakers. He eventually signed with the Chicago Bulls and will play alongside former Lakers Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso.
Former NBA players arrested in $ 4 million NBA health insurance fraud
NBC’s Jonathan Dienst says 18 former players have been indicted by New York Federal Court of defrauding the NBA player health and wellness benefit plan by claiming bogus claims for dental services and medical that they had never intended to obtain. Compared to the Wall Street fraud, $ 4 million is tiny, but this health insurance established by the NBPA’s latest CBA deal was intended to help older gamers who desperately need health care to survive. Candace Buckner of the Washington Post had great insight on this issue.
