Three people have been arrested in Egypt for throwing away thousands of doses of COVID-19 vaccines without permission, Reuters reports.
The discarded doses were found as photographs appeared on social media showing white packets containing the vaccines strewn along a waterway in Bani Mazar province, north of Minya.
An unauthorized pharmacist and an official involved in the incident were detained for gross negligence, along with a driver from the Ministry of Health who was supposed to deliver the vaccines to the health directorate in Minya town. All three were arrested after giving conflicting testimony.
Unused doses disappeared after being handed over to the delivery driver and before reaching their destination in Minya.
Unused vaccines are valued at more than 5 million Egyptian pounds, or $ 319,000. The vaccines were reportedly produced by the Chinese company Sinopharm.
Levels of COVID-19 in Egypt are listed as “moderate” level 2 by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. As of September 10, the country had 292,476 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 16,860 deaths, according to the United States Embassy in Egypt.
Only about 11% of the population has received a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while less than 6% are fully vaccinated.
