(CNN) – Authorities in Southern California on Saturday found “unidentified human remains” during their search for Lauren Cho, reported missing in June, The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBSD) said in a press release.
It could be weeks before the identity and cause of death are revealed, the SBSD said. The remains were found in the rugged terrain of the open desert of the Yucca Valley.
On June 28, Lauren “El” Cho, 30, from New Jersey, was staying with friends, including her ex-boyfriend, at a house in the Yucca Valley, about 30 miles north of Palm Springs and 12 miles from Joshua Tree National. To park. Friends said she was “upset and likely wandered away from the complex, leaving behind her belongings,” according to SBSD.
Her ex-boyfriend reported her missing about three hours after she went missing. Investigators said the ex-boyfriend “said she was suffering from mental distress.”
On July 24, the SBSD conducted an aerial search of the land near the residence, and on July 31, detectives searched the house.
As the Sheriff’s Department and volunteers scoured the area, Cho’s friends did too.
“We drove thousands of miles and tirelessly went to gas stations and stuck flyers in the low desert, the high desert,” said friend Jeff Frost. “We went to San Diego because she said the week before she disappeared that she just wanted to go to the beach.”
On a Facebook page created by Cho’s family, they ask the public to refrain from speculating about the case and Cho’s sanity at the time of her disappearance.
Cho is among several other people who went missing this summer, prompting control of the police for the many resources used to research Gabby Petito and her fiancé Brian Laundrie. But Cho’s family released a statement in mid-September citing the cases are different.
“We realize that on the surface, the public information for both cases shares some similarities. We understand the frustration many of you have expressed about how and why some cases have national coverage. In the end, these two cases are not the same and the differences are deeper than what is perceived by the public.
