Health officials are encouraging residents of Rhode Island to take anti-overdose medication because of the number of opioid overdoses occurring in public places.

The state health department said Monday that about 34 percent of emergency medical staff members who had been overdosed with opioids had intervened in 2018 in public places, such as streets, car parks, restaurants, shops and beaches. This represents 31% in 2017 and around 30% in 2016.

The ministry urged residents to wear naloxone, if they wish.

Health Director Nicole Alexander-Scott explains that naloxone is available at Rhode Island pharmacies and is easy to use.

Rhode Island has seen a decrease in opioid-related overdose deaths in the first 10 months of 2018. The annual total will be available in a few weeks.
