Charles and Camilla's trip should usher in a new chapter in relations between the United Kingdom and the communist state

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall marked history by becoming the first members of the royal family to officially go to Cuba.

The trip of Prince Charles and Camilla is expected to usher in a new chapter of relations between the United Kingdom and the Communist State.

The couple attended a wreath laying ceremony for the national hero, essayist and poet José Marti.

They must join the president of the country for an official dinner.

Lord Ahmad, Commonwealth Minister, will visit the country later this week to represent the British government.

The presence of Lord Ahmad shows how Downing Street views the four-day visit to Cuba and its potential for developing new avenues with a country that has already begun the process of economic and social openness.

After the couple entered the Cuban soil Sunday after the British ministerial jet, the RAF Voyager, the Cuban authorities briefly shook hands before being taken to the wreath laying ceremony.

Prince Charles was silently contemplating a large rose wreath placed at the open-air monument of the Revolution Square in Havana.

The royal couple arrived from Barbados, one of the five Commonwealth kingdoms they visited.

St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines were also part of their tour.

The Castro brothers, first Fidel and then Raul, ruled Cuba between 1959 and 2018, before Mr. Castro handed over the presidency to Miguel Diaz-Canel.

In recent years, private firms have been encouraged, although they have been reduced amid fears that reforms fuel inequality.

Charles' visit offers the British and Cuban governments the opportunity to strengthen their ties.

The royal couple does not plan to meet Raul Castro, but they will be the guests of honor of an official dinner offered by Mr. Diaz-Canel.

The prince and his wife will also meet members of the Buena Vista Social Club in a recording studio in Havana.

The band became a worldwide celebrity when their 1997 album became a surprise global hit and Grammy Award winner.
